Monthly Do: Come and Play…

19 May 2012 - 20 May 2012

The Monthly Do will expand in May to be a weekend of alternative sport for all. In this exciting year of sport, we have invited artists to explore the art within games and invite you to compete in their games. Adding an...other layer to a strong history of artists exploring games within their practice, from the Surrealists use of them as a method of investigation to Joseph Beuys infamous Boxing match, this is sure to be an exciting weekend. Come along and pick a side, this is what we have lined up:

Play Chess with Alex Baker
on Saturday 19 May, 12 midday - 9pm

REVERSE CHESS is a game where all the normal rules of chess are turned on their head, the idea is to force your opponent to take all your pieces - the winner is the loser. Capturing is compulsory, you win by having all your pieces taken, by not being able to move your remaining pieces, or by forcing your opponent to put you into check mate (very difficult!). Turn up to join and try out, pitch yourself against others, prepare to think back to front in order to lose your way to victory. Chess sets will be provided, rules and assistance will be available throughout the day. Reverse Chess Club is suitable for all ages and is all-weather friendly.

Join A SLOW BIKE RACE hosted by Harry Meadows
on Saturday at 4pm, 5pm and 6pm

The winner of A Slow Bike Race will be the cyclist who takes the longest time to complete the course. Slowly travelling forward without falling off, riders compete to finish last over a course that extends 100 meters through Battersea Park. Sinew over steel cogs will tease out time and space like clockwork oiled by lactic acid and chain grease. The race will be accompanied by a band of guest commentators who will inform, educate and entertain. If you would like to take part in the race email us or telephone 020 8871 7572 to reserve your space in a race.

*************** REVERSE CHESS CLUB'S POP UP BAR will be serving black and white refreshments from 5 - 9pm on the Saturday as part of Museums at Night 2012 *****************

WALK with Holly Gramazio of Hide&Seek
on Saturday 19 May at 2pm and Sunday 20 May 2pm & 4pm

Take a guided walk around Battersea Park and find out about strange games and competitions in the area's past: from the fierce duels to the fake elections, from the first football match played under FA rules to G.K. Chesterton's mysterious Gype. Booking not necessary, walks will begin from outside the gallery.

Compete in Daniel Lehan's AUSTERITY OLYMPICS

11am - 5pm  on Sunday 20 May

In 1948 London hosted the Olympics - nicknamed The Austerity Olympics - given they were held in reduced circumstances following the Second World War. Recently there were calls - given the current economic climate - to make the 2012 Olympics similarly austere. With tongue firmly in cheek Pump House Gallery is now hosting artist Daniel Lehan's official Austerity Olympics, activities will include individual, team, field, and track events held indoors and outdoors, conditioned by the utter lack of funding and resources available to stage such an event. Simply turn up on the day to participate and to cheer!

Come and Play... is presented in partnership with Groundworks Spots and Stripes programme, and is part of Wandsworth Arts Festival and Museums at Night 2012.
